I’ve updated the External Link Icons plugin to fix compatibility with multiple onLoad events (from other plugins for example). I’ve also added an options panel for some of it’s settings.
I’ve also added some new plugins:
NiftyCorners: Although not 100% complete, this plugin implements the nifty DHTML based rouneded corners (as seen on my site here). You’ll need to hack the makeNifty() function in the includes/niftyAddLoad.js to have it round the elements you want, set the correct colors etc. — eventually all this will be added to the admin.
Auto Archive Index: If your template provides an archives.php template for generating an archives index page, and you have your rewrite rules setup properly, this will allow the page to show up automatically when browsing to /archives/. It does this by overriding the 404/file not found handling built into wordpress. Please note that since I use lighttpd, this hasn’t been tested on Apache.
Domain Cookies: Normally, cookies are tied to a particular host (www.webmages.com for example). But there are times when you might want them to apply to an entire domain (anything.webmages.com). This plugin turns on that ability. (temporarily unlinked so I can fix a bug)
My contact information is in the source code for the plugins. I hope you find them usefull!
I’ve been using “Hallow” as my internet pseudonym since I first came online, back in 1991 or 1992, since my bbs nick name “bonebreaker” was too long for irc.
Over the years, I’ve had people refer to it as “Hollow”. I’ve emailed with a guy who’s last name is Hallow. Never though about registering hallow.com, someone else did it. Don’t go there. It’s not adult content, it’s some stupid ad-filled search engine thing. There’s a set of Magic: The Gathering cards called Hallow. Ok, that’s all cool.
But I found out today that there’s a band called Hallow. It’s nice that they’ve named the band after me, but I’ll have to see if they’re any good. (Well, they probably don’t even know I exist). They look young enough that I probably was using the nick while they were still in elementary school.
Am I getting old or what?
While I wish them no ill will, I hope they never become popular under that name (don’t want to have to change my nick).
Found a nice lighttpd tip from Viktors Rotanovs.
Lighttpd by default can be slower than TUX. Why? Because TUX runs inside Linux kernel and has the highest possible priority, while lighttpd is just ordinary userspace process. Solution? Make lighttpd not so nice:
nice -20 /opt/lighttpd/sbin/lighttpd …
That’s great! Why didn’t I think of that? Be sure to read the full post for more details, especially if you’re using the adaptive fast cgi spawning.
WordPress 1.5.1 is out if you have not yet discovered it. It’s the software that powers this blog. I ran into a few problems with my upgrade (mostly related to a 1 line hack that allows compatibility with lighttpd), but by and large it went fine. In doing the upgrade I discovered that something changed with the default theme - the header image I had been using no longer worked (it wasn’t tall enough). So I decided it was time for a new look and feel. The default template just wasn’t doing it for me anymore.
I looked to some existing themes for inspiration, and found Green Marinee. I really like the color scheme, but not so much the layout. So I started with the default WordPress theme (Kubrick), and hacked up a whole new design.
Along the way, I picked up negative margins for a liquid layout, and nifty rounded corners.
I still have some refinement to do, especially with integrating nifty corners with my external link icons plugin, but I think it looks darn good. Too bad I missed the themes competition. Anyway, I’ll probably be releasing this as a downloadable theme in the not too distant future.
The past month has been really busy, and not much fun. We’ve had things during the week (work or otherwise), that have resulted in me getting home late and being over-tired. Bonnie’s got a sinus infection, which resulted in an entire day spent in Richmond, plus a major downturn in general around-the-house productivity. We’ve had “stuff” every weekend pretty much since Easter - mother’s day, confirmations, birthdays, ad naseum. Add on top of that a few bouts with my intestines, Bonnie stressing about going back to work, both our portches needing some serious help, and not more than 3-4 consecutive days without rain (and just about never on a weekend), and our house is pretty stressed out.
If things were’nt already bad enough already — Bonnie got a ticket today because I failed to renew the registration on the ford (a 1996 ford contour with ~125,000 miles). So I went and registered online for 2 years $59. Ontop of that, the ticket was $81, for a grand total of $140. The car’s worth not much more than that. At least it wasn’t a moving violation.
