getting it together now

Ok. I’ve gotten my utilities setup. I had the option of keeping the old phone number since my phone line still runs to the same central office, but I decided to get a new one. I’ve been at getting people calling for the McCormik’s ever since I originally got my old number about 2 years ago, and it shows no signs of letting up. I also got my new address which is prett nice because it doesn’t have an apartment number. It should make some things a bit easier.

The only crappy thing is that I’m going to wind up paying double on most of my utilities for about 2 weeks, since I want to keep the power and phone active at my old apartment until the 30th for cleaning and/or emergency purposes.

I only have 3 things left, to change the address at my bank, to change my address at work, and to get my updated driver’s license. Oh, and I’m waiting for a call back from my insurance agent about my renter’s insurance policy.

It’s amazing how complex our lives are, how many people need our phone numbers and addresses. It’s not any wonder that lots of people like the idea of having all their services through one company. It would sure make things like moving easier. But I really don’t think it would be good in the long run. I found that a bill payment service such as PayTrust can really be an invaluable tool for keeping this stuff organized. Not to mention it keeps my bills payed on time, every time. (FYI, I didn’t include my “referral” url to PayTrust. I really honestly love the service, and am not just looking for a free month.)

sheesh

Okay. It’s nearly quitting time for the day. It’s also 90°F outside (32°C for you metric folks). That’s too damn hot, especially for almost 6 in the evening. Of course it doesn’t really start getting dark until about 7 now. I tell you, I could probably survive without air conditioning, but I’d be one super grumpy bastard if I did.

I think my next vehicle is going to have to have remote start capability and remote control climate control and windows. My car enterior is gray, and I know from experience… I’m not going to be able to drive it for 5-10 minutes because the steering wheel is going to be so hot. I swear, if there was a place on this planet I could move that maintained a temperature of 50-72°F year round I would move there in a heartbeat. Even if it rained all day every day.

moving is a pain

For those of you who don’t already know, I’m moving from my current apartment (Park West End near Broad & Glenside), to Legends at Virginia Center. The complex I’m in now just isn’t meeting my needs. They don’t take care of the one dumpster in the community so it’s often overflowing, I had to drive my clothes to the laundry on the other side of the complex for over a month because of a broken hot water heater in the laundry room. The management is kind of unprofessional in that they don’t seem to care about actually keeping their advertised hours. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

You see, I’m an avid technophile. I’ve got 2 computers (including one of the new apple imacs), a big TV, 2 dvd players, a playstation 2, DirecTV with tivo, and numerous other gadgets. I’ve also got a local radio station broadcast facility right behind my complex, not to mention a 10+ year old apartment with electrical problems. I’ve had my UPS kick in several times in the past month even when the power wasn’t out. I can hear the local radio station on the phone, and even when using filters to clean that up still have a lot of static. My x10 RF home-automation stuff works only intermittently, and my wireless phone jack for my satellite reciver/tivo box doesn’t work at all. So I’m moving somewhere with newer wiring and nowhere near as much RF (radio frequency) interference.

The only downside to where I’m moving is that it’s a bit far away. I’ll still be about the same distance timewise from work, and I’m literally right across the street from a mall and a movie theater, but I’m going to have to driver 10 minutes or so to rent a movie.

Oh, and it’s on the third floor, so it’s going to force me to get a little extra exercise. Although moving in/out is going to be a pain. So I called Two Guys and a Truck. I’m having them move the heavy bulky stuff only, and I’ll take care (with a bit of help from friends and family) of the rest of my stuff. The really big pain is going to be my aquarium. I’ve got a 75 gallon for my tiger oscar named Spot. I’m going to have to move him into a cramped 15gal. for the move, and he’s going to have to live there for about 3 weeks until the 75 gallon is setup and cycled again.

So don’t ask me what I’m doing this weekend, because I’m busy!
